Air Diffuser

CFD simulations can provide unique insight into the operation of food processing equipment, sometimes correcting intuitive assumptions regarding air flow patterns. The air diffuser shown below was used to distribute the centrally-supplied air to a thin slot that spanned the width of the product stream. Supply flow rate, and total effectiveness, was limited by product disturbances seen below the supply duct, presumably due to higher velocities in that area.

Simulation of that device showed that the velocities were quite uniform, and that the product disturbances were due to higher flow angularity near the supply duct. A simple modification was developed that corrected the flow angularity.
