Abstract: Airflow Sciences Corporation worked on the
development of Intensive Quenching (IQ) techniques and equipment that
can be used to create higher strength parts from existing steel
alloys. Intensive quenching is an environmentally friendly process
that uses plain water rather than hazardous oil or costly polymer
solutions. The combination of very high initial cooling rates and an
interrupted quench results in high residual compressive stresses that
provide increased strength and wear resistance. Find out how these
techniques were applied to gears and other components in the full final
report.
