Isophase Bus Ductsphysical isophase model

As nuclear power plants are increasing their output, the efficiency of the cooling system in the isophase bus ducts becomes more important. Maximum cooling capacity can be achieved by balancing air flow, whether in an

existing system, or as part of an upgrade to the bus, bus ducts, or fans. ASC accurately measures the flow in the duct branches, then balances flow through an iterative process of fan operation and damper position changes.

For one particularly challenging bus duct geometry that had the additional complexity of limited test port accessibility, a full scale mock-up of the generator-side ducts was fabricated in ASC's laboratory. The purpose of this physical model was:

  • to understand the flow patterns
  • to develop correlation curves for flow rate versus damper setting in various branches.

The results of this flow study allowed accurate, repeatable flow measurements in the generator-side ducts, giving the ability to balance flow between the branches.
