Patent Infringement
Simply put, patent infringement is the violation of a patent holder's rights to their invention. In the ~ 25 years we have been assisting legal clients, our professional engineers have worked numerous cases involving the claim of patent infringement. Projects have spanned numerous industries with topics ranging from automotive design to HVAC systems for vertical farming.
Airflow engineers use their advanced knowledge of fluid dynamics to dive into patent claims and provide support to legal cases. We specialize in measuring and testing velocity, temperature, pressure, flow rate, chemical species, and sound level. We also have multiple wind tunnels for aerodynamic testing and a full-service fabrication shop. The combination of resources and expertise allows us to review technical data and patents, perform engineering analysis, evaluate depositions and evidence, and testify in court as an expert witness.
With Airflow Sciences' professional engineers on your legal team, you'll gain access to our extensive knowledge and experience. Reach out today to learn more about how we can help you work towards a favorable outcome for your client.
Flow Modeling Shows Ventilation of Flammable Gases
In a recent case, Airflow Sciences Corporation provided engineering services and expert testimony regarding an explosion of a commercial boat that resulted in the death of two people. ASC produced valuable scientific reports, graphics of the design modifications, and videos that showed a simulation of vapor dispersion inside the hull. Our senior engineer Jim Paul, P.E. provided expert testimony, which resulted in a favorable outcome for our client.
Investigators determined that the explosion was caused by gasoline vapor in the vessel’s hull. Our engineering team evaluated the vessel and in particular the design of the enclosed hull, showing with careful analysis that the existing hull design was inadequately ventilated to remove gasoline vapors. We also performed engineering analysis for two modified designs and showed how a simple design change may have prevented severe build-up of explosive vapors under certain conditions. Our 3D model and simulation of the hull interior showed how the modified vent designs were likely to clear gasoline vapor from the hull of a moving vessel within 15 minutes, whereas the existing design was unlikely to do so.
Locomotive Diesel Exhaust
As of 2021, Airflow Sciences has consulted on eleven legal cases where we evaluated train operators’ exposure to diesel exhaust. Clients choose us as experts because of our wealth of expertise related to air flow around trains.
Effects of the wind and the motion of the train can often create a flow pattern near to a locomotive’s cab where the exhaust plume recirculates instead of dispersing. Since locomotives are commonly operated with open windows, the operator can therefore be subject to these exhaust fumes. This can happen during line-haul operations but also in the switchyard.
For studies that involve operator exposure, we conduct a detailed analysis to predict the concentration of exhaust components that are present at the locomotive window for a variety of scenarios. We take into account the specific factors of the case – parameters such as weather conditions, operating speeds, locomotive geometry, and commonly traveled routes. Images and videos of our computer simulations make it easy to visualize the exhaust plume behavior. We arm our clients with the data, visuals, and expert testimony they need to make a strong case.
